Renault Group announces Philippe Krief as CTO, effective September 1, 2024. Krief, also CEO of Alpine, will lead engineering efforts to position Renault at the forefront of automotive innovation amidst industry transformation.

Renault Group has officially appointed Philippe Krief as its new Chief Technology Officer (CTO), starting September 1, 2024. Krief will succeed Gilles Le Borgne, who will transition to a strategic advisory role to the CEO. In his new capacity, Krief will oversee all engineering activities and resources within Renault Group, reporting directly to CEO Luca de Meo.

Krief brings extensive experience to the role, particularly from his tenure as Director of Engineering at Ferrari. His primary objective as CTO will be to position Renault Group at the cutting edge of automotive innovation, outpacing competitors amid significant industry transformation.

In addition to his new responsibilities as CTO, Krief will continue to serve as CEO of Alpine. Over the past year, he has successfully executed the brand’s strategy, launching the new Alpine range, including the A290 and the upcoming GT crossover. Under his leadership, Alpine has accelerated the development of its high-performance, 100% electric vehicle platform and embraced hydrogen power with the Alpenglow Hy4 prototype, showcasing innovative hydrogen engine technology.

Luca de Meo, CEO of Renault Group, expressed his gratitude to Gilles Le Borgne, saying, “Gilles has contributed to our company’s spectacular turnaround, the fastest in recent automotive history. He was able to get our engineering moving again, and to regain efficiency, enabling us to deliver a large number of the models in the Renaulution plan this year.

”My warmest thanks to him. He is leaving a prime position and high-performance teams to Philippe, who I’m sure, drawing on his wealth of experience, will drive forward a new dynamic to gain an even greater lead in the face of competition coming from both the East and the West.

Krief’s educational background includes graduating from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Techniques Avancées.

His career began at Michelin, followed by roles at Fiat Group, Ferrari, and Maserati, where he served as Vehicle Department Director and Technical Director of the Alfa Romeo brand. Returning to Ferrari in 2016, he took on the role of Director of Engineering before joining Alpine as Director of Engineering and Product Performance in early 2023, and subsequently becoming CEO.
