US/China – The belt drive Electric Power Steering (EPS) system will feature on the next-generation SUV which is to be launched by the Chinese OEM in 2015. Over the past two years, TRW Automotive Holdings has established a regional production base at Anting, with capacity for 800,000 units per year.
Peter Lake, executive vice-president, Sales and Business Development, commented: “We have already launched our column drive technology with both China [sic] domestic and international customers and are now introducing our latest innovation – EPS belt drive – in China.”
Lake added that the belt drive system is “ideal” for mid to large SUVs because larger vehicles require greater steering rack forces. TRW says that, together, the column drive unit and the belt drive can deliver fuel savings of 0.3-0.4 L/100km, reducing CO2 emissions by 7-8g/km.
