The brand new 300,000 sq.m facility, now under construction in western Slovakia, will manufacture JLR's new range of high-tech, lightweight aluminium vehicles. With an annual capacity predicted at 150,000 cars, production is set to begin in 2018.
The £1bn facility will be the first in Europe to use Kuka’s Pulse carrier system and will also feature a highly automated paintshop.
JLR say the plant has been designed with smart manufacturing technologies in mind, supporting ongoing improved process efficiency, delivery and quality.
JLR CEO Dr. Ralf Speth said: “The start of construction in Slovakia represents the beginning of a new phase in our plan to create a truly global business. The factory will strengthen our international manufacturing capabilities as well as complement our existing facilities in the UK, China, India and Brazil.”
The site will also incorporate environmental and sustainability measures, such as water-saving and heat recovery systems. When fully operational, the Nitra plant will employ 2,800 people.
