Austria - Magna has announced that it will build the new Toyota Supra at its facility in Graz, Austria. The car was first revealed at the 2019 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), and is expected to enter production in early 2019.
As well as assembling the Supra, Magna will also be supplying the seats, body stampings, door latches and liftgate for the model.
"This contract from Toyota is a testament to our manufacturing expertise and our ability to deliver on the high quality standards we know our customers expect when building their vehicles," commented Günther Apfalter, president of Magna Europe and Magna Steyr. "This is yet another example of how we are uniquely positioned to support automakers that need additional capacity and new entrants looking for whole vehicle expertise."
The Graz factory has been a hive of activity over the past few years. It is already home to production of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, BMW 5 Series, Jaguar E-Pace and Jaguar I-Pace. Contracts for the two Jaguar vehicles were announced in 2017 and 2018 respectively.
Back in October 2017, Magna announced that it was building a paint shop in Maribor, Slovenia due to "a full book of business" in Graz. The new facility, which cost US$100m, is expected to start operation in 2019.
The supplier also opened a new seating facility in Chomutov, Czech Republic in October 2018. It is being used exclusively to make BMW seats, with an annual capacity of over 360,000 units a year.
