BASF’s high-temperature polyamide Ultramid Endure D5G3 BM is being used in a charge air duct, now in serial production, being fitted to the BMW 2.0-litre turbo charged, four-cylinder engine. The part is exposed to both high temperature and pressure and BASF says this material is temperature resistant up to 220°C at continuous use, with possible peak temperature loads of up to 240°C.
The company claims the properties of this material make it suitable for manufacturing by blow moulding, which offers costs benefits due to lower processing temperatures, shorter cycle times and reduced energy consumption.
