Germany – Based on the chassis of the Ford Transit, the vehicle will be fitted with an electric drivetrain and a body tailored to Deutsche Post and DHL Paket specifications. The start of production is scheduled for July 2017.
“E-Mobility and innovative traffic solutions for urban areas are key focuses for us as we transform our business to meet future challenges,” commented Steven Armstrong, group vice-president and president of Europe, Middle East and Africa, Ford. “As the leader in commercial vehicles in Europe, this partnership plays perfectly to our strengths and in StreetScooters and the Deutsche Post DHL Group we have a partner with enormous competence and a worldwide network.”
Deutsche Post previously introduced its StreetScooter into the smaller van segment, taking care of the design and manufacturing itself, and currently operates 2,500 units in Germany. It is planned that the partnership with Ford will produce at least 2,500 larger vehicles by 2018 to support the delivery fleet of the Deutsche Post DHL Group.
A new assembly line will be established but the existing StreetScooter manufacturing operation will also be expanded; production is set to hit 20,000 units per year at a factory in Aachen and another site in North Rhine-Westphalia.
