Stellantis has launched its STLA Frame platform which supports internal combustion, hybrid, hydrogen, battery electric and range-extender electric vehicle powertrains.
With pure EV demand weakening vehicle makers are having to broaden their powertrain offerings but this means having scalable platforms that can accommodate this multi-energy mix. These offer flexibility but can also increase complexity in the assembly process.
Stellantis now offers four BEV platforms, which it claims are designed and engineered for extended lifecycles via the interchangeability of battery cell chemistry, EDMs, power inverters and software control.
The latest of these is the STLA Frame platform, which the company says has been engineered for the full-size body-on-frame pickup trucks and SUVs segment in North America and select global markets and offers both 400-volt and 800-volt EV architectures.
The OEM says that STLA Frame vehicles will initially be offered with an innovative propulsion lineup, including a full BEV system and a range-extended electric vehicle (REEV) configuration while the platform can also accommodate internal combustion, hybrid and hydrogen propulsion systems in the future.
The REEV system, which combines a battery, front and rear electric drive modules (EDMs), on-board generator and internal combustion engine. Stellantis says this allows drivers to haul or tow heavy loads over extended distance without sacrificing range.
This new platform will underpin the 2025 Ram 1500 REV, a battery-electric light-duty truck, and the Ram 1500 Ramcharger, a range-extended model. These will be built at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant (SHAP) which has received a $235m investment to enable to produce electric vehicles. The OEM says SHAP’s multi-energy strategy allows for simultaneous production of internal combustion engine (ICE), battery electric vehicle (BEV), and range-extended models on a single line.
Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said: “With full EV and extended-range EV tech coming soon, we’re bringing ‘no compromise’ solutions to buyers who may be hesitant on trying their first electric vehicle. We’re proud of this engineering marvel and look forward to seeing it come to life in our upcoming product blitz on Jeep and Ram.”
