US - The milestone was celebrated at the company's Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan, where Ford also makes the Lincoln Continental. It has previously been built in San Jose, California as well as Metuchen, New Jersey.
Now in its 54th year of production, the Mustang is the best-selling sports car of the last 50 years, according to figures from IHS Markit. Another important milestone for the muscle car was hit in 2015 when it went on sale in Europe. Since then, over 38,000 units have been delivered, making it more popular than the Porsche 911 across 13 European markets.
Back at the start of 2017, Ford announced that it was spending US$700m on its Flat Rock Assembly Plant in order to ready it for the production of autonomous and electrified vehicles, while $200m was being put aside to build an advanced data on site. These investments, the company added, would create over 700 new jobs.
By 2020, the OEM hopes to be making an all-new fully electric small SUV and a hybrid version of the Mustang at Flat Rock. It will then look to start building a highly autonomous hybrid vehicle designed specifically for the ride-hailing market in 2021.
