    South-East Asia has long been a catch that Western and even Korean vehicle-makers have failed to land, with its population of 650m people significantly under-represented in vehicle ownership. But the Chinese are now mounting their most serious attack yet on the domination of Japanese brands in the region, after Geely was announced in May as the new foreign partner of Malaysia’s struggling Proton Cars, beating France’s PSA Group. Geely, which also owns Volvo, joins a list of Chinese vehicle-makers targeting South-East Asia. For example, SAIC is expanding its Thai operations and the SAIC-General Motors brand Wuling, which this year is launching a car designed for Indonesia, has built a new factory there…
