Hyundai-Skoda hydrogen tech development MOU

The memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by Hyundai and Skoda is the latest hydrogen technology collaboration to be announced following the recent news from Toyota and BMW and reinforces the trend towards building a wider powertrain mix.

This potential tie-up would include Hyundai sharing its fuel cell system and technology with Skoda, supporting the wider application of hydrogen powertrains across global markets where Skoda operates, including the Czech Republic.

The MOU covers other developments with both companies looking to conduct feasibility studies for fuel cell system applications for beyond mobility.

“We believe that hydrogen, alongside energy-efficient solutions, will play an essential role in transforming mobility for a more sustainable future. Our collaboration with Hyundai Motor Company aims at enabling us to look beyond national borders and explore wider markets where these technologies can have a larger impact. By working together, we can bring innovative, eco-friendly solutions to the global mobility ecosystem, advancing cleaner energy in the areas where it’s needed most,” said Petr Novotný, CEO of Skoda Group.

Hyundai and GM’s recent MOU

Hyundai are clearly expanding in a certain direction. The carmaker recently joined forces with GM to explore collaborative opportunities in vehicle development, clean energy technologies and supply chain management.

Potential areas of collaboration include joint development and production of passenger and commercial vehicles, shared development of internal combustion engines and clean-energy technologies, and combined sourcing of battery raw materials, steel, and other components.

The partnership aims to harness the combined strengths of both companies to reduce costs, accelerate product development, and offer a broader range of vehicles to customers

The agreement, signed by Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung and GM Chair and CEO Mary Barra, reflects a shared vision of unlocking the potential of both companies to deliver more competitive vehicles to customers faster and more efficiently.

Both leaders expressed optimism about the partnership’s potential to drive innovation and enhance competitiveness in key markets. The companies will now begin assessing specific collaboration projects and working towards binding agreements.
