US – Two of the OEM’s plants in Ohio and one in Indiana have received the certification this year, signifying that they are performing in the top 25% of similar facilities in terms of energy usage. The Marysville and East Liberty factories in Ohio won the award for the 11th consecutive year, while Honda Manufacturing of Indiana received it for the fifth time in a row.
“Honda is constantly looking for ways to improve our operational energy efficiency,” said Joanne Bambeck, environmental unit leader at Honda North America. “Our facilities all contribute new ideas and methods to reduce our energy needs and this culture is ultimately what will ensure our energy sustainability.”
Last year East Liberty, which makes the Honda Accord, Civic and CR-V plus the Acura TLX and RDX, expanded its use of LED lighting and introduced two high-efficiency, 1,350-ton chillers to cut emissions by 432 tons. Meanwhile, the Indiana plant at Greensburg, which produces the Civic and CR-V, modified its compressed-air storage system to maximise the performance of the compressors.
In addition to its manufacturing operations, Honda’s new heritage centre and its Marysville office both received certifications.
The Energy Star programme was introduced by the US Environmental Protection Agency in 1992 to encourage the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. Certified plants consume an average of 35% less energy and give out 35% fewer emissions.
