Audi starts making e-tron electric SUV04 September 2018 | Automotive Manufacturing Solutions
Belgium – The company’s first all-electric SUV started rolling off production lines at its factory in Vorst – a southwestern municipality of Brussels. This follows significant investment in the plant.
“The Audi e-tron is a real pioneer,” commented Peter Kössler, board member for production and logistics at Audi. “It has innovative technologies such as virtual exterior mirrors and combines classic Audi qualities in handling and dynamics with a technical edge that goes far beyond the car. Thus, our factory in Brussels was extensively modernised for the production of the electric car. It is the world’s first certified CO2-neutral mass production in the premium segment.”
A new building was added to the plant for battery manufacturing, while the body shop, paint shop and assembly areas were all rebuilt. Furthermore, employees at the Brussels factory received extensive training ahead of making the electric SUV.
The news comes soon after the OEM announced it had started making electric motors at its facility in Győr, Hungary. Audi also said it would make electric SUVs at its Ingolstadt factory in Germany back in 2017.
