Operating through its joint venture with Dongfeng Motor Corporation this strategic expansion signals Honda’s deepening commitment to the Chinese EV market and marks a milestone in the company’s global transition towards electrification.

The new facility will have an annual capacity of approximately 120,000 units and incorporates advanced automation throughout the assembly process, including a multi-level automated warehouse and fully automated logistics in the stamping area, eliminating the need for logistics personnel.

Environmentalist approaches central to Dongfeng

Environmental responsibility is at the forefront of this project. The plant has implemented several energy-saving measures, such as utilising natural lighting and reusing thermal energy generated during production. Furthermore, real-time monitoring optimises energy consumption in each process, minimising waste and improving sustainability.

China, the world’s largest EV market, plays a crucial role in Honda’s electrification goals. By enhancing its local production capacity, Honda is positioning itself to compete with domestic Chinese brands and meet rising EV demand. The company’s investment of 4 billion RMB ($560m) in the Wuhan plant reflects its long-term commitment to sustainable growth in the region.
